I KNOW OF ONE OCCASION WHEN JAMES HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A FIELD CLOSE TO THE NOW LACEBY BY PASS
AT THE TIME FLYING A HAWKER HIND

 

 

I KNOW OF ANOTHER OCCASION WHILST FLYING DOWN TO OXFORDSHIRE HE MADE A FORCED LANDING AT RAF BRIZE NORTON DUE TO FOG

 

 

UNCLE JAMES FLEW AT THE GRASS STRIP IN WALTHAM MOST WEEKENDS BEFORE IT BECAME AN AIRFIELD
IN THOSE DAYS IT WAS VERY MUCH A HOBBY


HE JOINED THE CIVIL AIR GUARD AT WALTHAM
FLYING MILES MAGISTERS AND HAWKER HINDS/HARTS

 

BY TRADE HE WAS A CARPENTER WORKING ON THE WOODEN SHUTTERING FOR THE HANGAR BASES AT RAF BINBROOK

 

HE FLEW WITH THE E&RFTS AT BROUGH YORKSHIRE

 

HE JOINED THE RAF AS AN RAFVR

HE WAS STATIONED AT BROUGH IN YORKSHIRE AS A FLYING INSTRUCTOR

 

JAMES H HASELDEN WAS INVOLVED IN A MID AIR COLLISION WITH ANOTHER AIRCRAFT WHILST FLYING A BLACKBURN B2 G-ACLC FROM BROUGH

24th JUNE 1940

 

JAMES DIED 27th JUNE 1940 FROM SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES

THE OTHER PILOT DIED ALSO HAVING CRASHED INTO THE RIVER HUMBER

THE STUDENT SURVIVED BUT DIED A YEAR OR SO LATER

 

SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS COLLISION HAS NEVER BEEN MADE PUBLIC TO MY KNOWLEDGE
